What is SafeStart?

SafeStart is an advanced safety awareness and skills development programme that aims to help people avoid the unintentional mistakes that lead to injury.

It is not about policies, procedures or even specific hazards, but about having an alert attitude, keeping those hazards in mind and in sight in real time, especially when the risk is greatest.

In short, SafeStart equips people to be significantly more aware of risky situations and to automatically act in a way that keeps themselves safe.

Knowing about a hazard will not help at all if you become distracted or aren’t looking at it at the critical moment. SafeStart helps people understand when they are most likely to make an injury causing error and what to do to prevent the error in the first place.

Instead of focusing on the hazard, SafeStart focuses on the state of mind or body that the person is in.

It highlights to people that there are four states: Rushing, Frustration, Fatigue, and Complacency, which may cause or contribute to four critical errors: Eyes not on Task, Mind not on Task, Line-of- Fire and Balance/Traction/Grip.

More than 90% of all injuries, whether at home, at work or on the road, are caused by this “state-(leading) to-error pattern.”
One of the fundamental aspects of SafeStart training sessions is to get people to recognise how these state-to-error patterns can increase the risk of injury for them and how it has done so with past incidents and injuries that they have suffered.

By making people aware of this state-to-error risk pattern, it is then possible to provide them with skills and techniques to minimise these injury causing errors.

Benefits of SafeStart

Besides the obvious human and financial benefits associated with a reduction of incidents and workplace injuries, the SafeStart programme offers many additional benefits.

SafeStart reduces injuries outside of work as well as at work. It is efficient, provides a positive return on investment and actively increases personal awareness for safety.

A large part of the success of SafeStart can be credited to the fact that the programme is relevant to everyone, everywhere, no matter what industry or culture people come from. The success is also, in part, due to the fact that people can take the concepts and skills out of the workplace and home to their families, providing the motivation and involvement that ultimately leads to a positive change in the overall safety culture.

Implementation Methodology

We don’t consider ourselves a traditional company that sells “products”, as a large part of our work is focused on bespoke services and solutions to guarantee the success of our clients.

There are, however, numerous formal elements that are used within the programmes that we deliver. Over time, those elements work together to form an effective long term solution—the ultimate goal for all of our clients. After thousands of implementations all over the world, we understand that the best long term results are achieved by clients who integrate SafeStart into their wider safety management system. For many of them, this becomes the foundation of their safety culture and performance improvements over many years.

Taking SafeStart Home is an integral component of the SafeStart programme and available to all participants.

By providing people with tools to help them take the concepts of SafeStart home, we are giving people the opportunity to keep their families safer as well as themselves. Ensuring that the benefits of SafeStart can reach as many people as possible. Aside from the obvious fact that anything that helps to keep our kids and grandkids safe is a great thing, this approach has been clearly demonstrated to increase participation and the effectiveness of SafeStart within the workplace – a genuine win-win!

Each employee will receive access to the the Taking SafeStart Home content after they have completed the core SafeStart programme within their company.

Taking SafeStart Home films

• Taking SafeStart Home (for 9-15 year olds)
• Hurt at Home (for all ages)

To ensure the long lasting success of the SafeStart programme, it is crucial to have the participation and support of the leaders within an organisation, from the beginning of the implementation and throughout.

During a half-day Leading SafeStart 24/7 workshop, the leadership team and other influencers in the organisation will be given tools and techniques to enable them to coach and support the programme during and after the implementation.

Benefits of the Workshop

• Helps to guarantee a successful implementation of the SafeStart programme
• Provides the basis for the long term reduction of injuries and improved safety culture
• Enables leaders to understand how they can harness the success of SafeStart to help improve other areas of the operation
• Develops understanding of both the potential human and financial benefits that the organisation can achieve with a successful implementation
• Provides tools and techniques to improve participants’ safety communication skills

The Steering Committee performs a critical role in the overall success of the SafeStart programme.

• To organise, promote and implement activities and events that foster the participation and continuous improvement of safety skills for employees and their families.
• To integrate the SafeStart concepts into wider activities in order to ensure the continuous improvement of your existing safety management system .

In this session of approximately four hours, we provide your chosen Steering Committee with the resources to fully support the SafeStart programme, both during the implementation of the core modules and for long term sustainability thereafter, including how to permanently integrate the concepts into your existing Safety Management System.

Benefits

• Ensures that employees keep focused and on track for a successful implementation
• Helps avoid potential pitfalls by learning from client case studies and our consultant teams’ own extensive experience
• Supplies inspiration and ideas for effective communications, internal marketing and ongoing programme support initiatives.

After the implementation of the core SafeStart programme, the Extended Application Units reinforce and enhance the learning and ensure that the initial impact is further built upon and extended into other areas of safety.

These units reinforce the techniques for the reduction of Critical Errors learned in the previous sessions, also provide additional content and context for prevention of injuries by using SafeStart concepts in different situations, such as with deliberate risk-taking, or to help recognising the impact of change. This capitalises on the enthusiasm previously generated and provides a continuous learning opportunity for participants.

The Extended Application Units follow the same delivery pattern as the core SafeStart modules, using an interactive classroom-based format. They embed the initial SafeStart training, and teach advanced techniques to further develop the good safety habits of employees with a combination of storytelling, group discussion, individual study and instructor led learning techniques.

Benefits

• Further ingrains the safety knowledge and results gained during the core SafeStart implementation
• Delivers advanced concepts to further improve employee safety skills
• Facilitates the application of SafeStart skills to additional situations
• Addresses difficult issues such as intentional risk and rule breaking within a non-confrontational format.
